I was thinking about some creative ideas for our group….Sugarplum the Band. We needed some artwork for upcoming events so I decided to take a look at nostalgic rock posters made for some the greatest groups of the 60’s. I didn’t want to copy them I only wanted to get a few ideas in my head so I could come up with my own spin on this art form. I wanted to get the feel for it.
I started using pencils to draw out my ideas and the sketches soon became the main focus. I decided to go “green” once again by only using pencils and paper instead of using paint or even graphic designs. I figure using color pencils only requires the use of natural light or maybe some small amount of electricity usage. While creating numerous twists on these style of nostalgic posters I realized how we sometimes forget that less is more. I encourage anyone looking to use less toxic art forms to spend some time finding other alternatives.
I buy pencils that come from recycled products and are environmentally friendly. It can be fun to get back to basics as an artist. See if you can come up with projects that will allow you to think outside the box while being ecologically responsible.
I have to admit I still use paints when I teach my art class or do a painting, however I usually stay with Acrylics. Even though I really love the effect Oils can produce, they are much more toxic. They also require other products including thinners and various semi-hazardous solvents that Acrylics do not.
Incorporating recycled art into my portfolio has not only allowed me to become more earth conscious….it also helped me discover exciting ways to produce unique art that does not leave a large carbon footprint. Change starts with me and I hold myself accountable to be as impeccable as I can be. I strive to be more conscious on a daily basis…..love to all!
